Running Together for a Cure: Taking on the Frontyard Ultra

When this husband-and-wife duo lace up their running shoes, they’re not just chasing kilometres , they’re running for a cause, for community, and for a future without cystic fibrosis.

Finding Purpose Through Cure4CF

Gemma’s journey with cystic fibrosis research began in an unexpected way.

“Whilst on maternity leave, i came across a role at Cure4CF. It felt like such an exciting opportunity — a chance to use my fundraising experience to build meaningful relationships and raise vital funds for research.”

But it was meeting the team that truly sealed it. “When I met the team — a group of like-minded mums working incredibly hard, I knew straight away I wanted to be part of it.”

The deeper her understanding of cystic fibrosis grew, the stronger her connection to the cause became. “The more I learn about CF and the incredible research happening, the more proud I feel to be raising money for such an important cause.”

Taking on the Challenge Together

For her and her husband Tom, running has always been part of their story. “We used to run a lot together before having children, and I’ve been itching to get back into it.”

With Tom’s parents visiting from the UK, the timing felt perfect. “It gave us the opportunity to take on a big challenge together — and to enjoy some ‘us’ time again while training side-by-side.”

What is the Frontyard Ultra

This year, they’re taking on something completely different — the Adelaide’s Frontyard Ultra. Unlike a traditional marathon, this event has no defined finish line.

“You run a 6.71km loop every hour, on the hour, until you can’t go any further.”

It’s simple in concept, but incredibly tough in reality. “You could still be running through the night with no sleep… and when you stop, you have to ring the bell. That’s it.”

It’s a true test of endurance, resilience, and mental strength.

Mind Over Matter

Ultra running quickly becomes more mental than physical. “There will be moments where your body hurts, your feet are covered in blisters, and everything in you says stop.”

But that’s where mindset takes over. “It’s incredible how much further you can push yourself when you get into the right headspace.”

With snacks on hand, music (hello Olivia Dean on repeat), and the support of family and friends, they’ll be digging deep to keep going..

Running with Perspective

Training hasn’t just been physical, it’s been reflective. “During tough runs, I’ve thought about how what we’re doing is nothing compared to the daily challenges people living with CF face.”

That perspective brings purpose to every step. “It reminds you why the fundraising side of the challenge is so important.”

Fundraising for Impact

Together, they’ve launched a fundraiser supporting the incredible work of Cure4CF Foundation. With a goal of $500, they’re adding a fun twist to their campaign.

“Everyone who donates can enter our sweepstake and guess how many laps we’ll complete, with prizes up for grabs!”

They’ll also be proudly wearing Cure4CF running gear on the day to raise awareness throughout the event.

Why it Matters

Through this journey, one thing has become clear — this is about more than running. “I’ve met some incredibly inspiring people in the CF community who never stop fighting and hoping for a cure.”

Being able to support that fight, even in a small way, means everything. “It makes me feel proud and more connected to the CF community.”

A Future Without CF

The goal is shared by everyone in the cystic fibrosis community, a cure. “I truly believe that with more time, funding, and focus, we can get there.”

And when that day comes, it will mean everything. “More time together. Fewer hospital visits. And the chance for people with CF to live full, healthy lives.”

A Message to Others

For anyone thinking about taking on a challenge or fundraising, her advice is simple: “Just do it.”

“If you’re already taking on a challenge, people genuinely want to support you. And when it’s for a cause like Cure4CF, it gives the whole experience even more meaning.”
