Research Grant Update

The response to our grant round has been overwhelming! We received expressions of interest from right across Australia, highlighting promising opportunities for translational CF research.

Now, we begin the process of determining the best projects to fund. We’ll do this with the help of our partners at the National Foundation for Medical Research and Innovation (NFMRI) and their expert Research Advisory Committee (RAC).

The RAC is a skills based advisory committee which includes representatives from:

• Basic academic science,
• Translational science,
• Industry and commercial science, and
• Clinicians

This mixture is important as the committee can have informed and robust discussions during the selection process.

A decision this important takes time and there are a few stages for applicants to go through before a final decision can be made.

In June, the RAC will meet and thoroughly review and assess each expression of interest received. Shortlisted projects will proceed to the next round and be invited to submit a full application.

Full applications will be assessed by the RAC in September and successful candidate/s announced in November/December of this year.

The NFMRI and Cure4CF partnership

In late 2018 Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (C4CF) proudly partnered with NFMRI.

The partnership will provide at least $750,000 to advance medical innovations in the area of cystic fibrosis over the next three years and will be named the ‘Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – Barbara Stow-Smith CF Innovation Grant‘, in honour of the Foundation’s first bequest.

NFMRI, who receive advice and recommendations from an established Research Advisory Committee, manage and administer grants on behalf of Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis. Its role is to identify, evaluate and support innovative and high-quality research projects with a clear impact.

From January 2019 Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis expanded its grant program to the national scientific research community and offer grant funding opportunities to a competitive research market, Australia wide. The broad reach of the NFMRI grant program to universities and medical research institutes across Australia, means that Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis can be aware of and potentially fund the best CF research initiatives across the country.

Our sole focus is to fund research that seeks to develop therapies or cures that will result in an increase in average life expectancy of people with cystic fibrosis with consideration given to quality of life.

Through collaboration with our CF community and investment in research we will help strengthen and expedite the delivery of research outcomes, and ultimately a cure for all people living with CF.
